I love how you put your words and seeing as how many can misconstrue the word "judge", it still play a reverse trick on the person that's making a judgment. I've always told myself that I have no right to judge anyone of any type for the sheer fact that I am no perfect being myself. For the society that we live in it seems fitting to judge according to how useful or helpful a person is going to be within the society and see fit to police any persons to make sure the society stays stable.

In my experience, judging seem to be a way to find fallacies in our selves and others so that we may correct ourselves and discover one more piece of the puzzle on how to gain perfection.

@Chris Rebert

It's just an observation from experience –– I've met people from MIT/Stanford/etc., and I've met people who are so thoroughly passionate about something that it's all they read/talk about.

The latter group is the group that makes exciting things. Sure, they occasionally overlap, but the commonality is that they're all genuinely excited about the stuff they're working on. The fact that a few attended Ivy League universities is rather irrelevant –– and good employers (like Apple) know that.

(Looking forward to seeing you too!)

For what it’s worth, this is why (good) employers will care more about your RSS subscriptions than your college degree. What you consider worth your time reading reveals a whole lot more about you than the university you attended.

This of course has absolutely no relation to the fact you're going to UCSD rather than, say, MIT, right? ;-)

Anyway, I look forward to meeting you in person when classes start. See ya then.

I agree with you, Brian. The old adage "You can pick your friends, not your family" only holds true if you actually pick your friends. Because of my association with only a few people, I have gained true friendships that will improve my life, as opposed to trying to fit the status quo.

Furthermore, I have learned more about my life ambitions through this mindset. I have learned that not only must I associate with the people I choose, but must also find an occupation that truly satisfies my potential. So while I know that I have the talent to do things other than teach, I still yearn to become a teacher. This is what I want to do, and it motivates me to know that I am "breaking the rules" and doing what I really want.

Wow. Beautifully said, and I agree with every word. Unfortunately, though, those "good employers" are pretty rare.
