I was reading your article and was agreeing until I realized I am one of those "imbeciles" and do believe in what is "effectively 'magic'" especially being a pagan. I agree that religion should not be the base of morals -holy wars and witch burnings anyone?- and should not be a social event whether in the form of services at church, temple, mosque or coven, but is religion that bad? If religion is taught properly it allows people to see the wonder, the miracle and beauty in every animal, tree, human and mountain.
On a different note, quit re-enforcing stereotypes when you try to prove you are above them. Just because a person is gothic , it does not mean thay are atheist (or satanic for that matter) most where crosses. Those that are insane are more often religious than atheist, believing they here the voice of God, so watch your stereotyping.
Finally, religion did not become acceptable because it was a vital part of wutch-hunts, but the other way around. Witch-hunts became acceptable because of the misguided standards of religion and the vital part religion played.
You have my deepest respect for your views, blessed be.

@Pierre Lourens

Fully agreed. I don't go as far as to say that my morals are even remotely sourced from (any) religion, but that doesn't go to disprove your point. Religion and morals don't need to be connected, and if you can extract positive morals from a religion without the side-effects, more power to you.

The way I see it, every aspect of my environment can be used to my benefit. As a human, I must learn from nature, history, and culture in order to understand the world in which I live. In the same way, I can say with confidence that there are lessons to be learned from religion--at least in regards to morals and respecting those around you.

The beauty of being atheist, yet still holding respect for these lessons, is that I can pick and choose which lessons I want to learn. I can study any religion purely as a source of inspiration for becoming a better person and still refuse to believe in a higher power. This is the beauty of science, history, and culture being woven together.

If I rejected everything from all religions, I would be worse-off.

I am an atheist, and I choose not to "subscribe" to any religion. But that doesn't mean I am going to reject the lessons taught by a multitude of religions, for that would be ignorant.
