What I Do
My business card says I’m a software designer at Extendmac. But that’s sort of misleading to most people (which is why I recommend turning said-business-card over).
Design
People think it’s this veneer — that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.
— Steve Jobs
In that sense, I design how software works. That encompasses engineering the architecture, writing the code, and illustrating the interface, but more importantly, thinking about how people will use it.
Philosophy
- It’s not about technology, it’s about what it does. My passion is making tools for people.
- If it needs a manual, it needs a redesign.
- Good user interface doesn’t happen by accident. It also can’t be taught from a book or a class.
- A jack of all trades is a master of none.
- True learning happens outside the classroom.
